Thinking of starting a new club? That’s awesome!
Before you begin, take a look through the Clubs Den Organizations to see what clubs are already active. If you don’t see one that matches your idea, that’s your sign to start something new!
What You Need to Start
To register a club, you’ll need:
- Three current LU students who are just as excited as you are.
These three must take on one of the following roles:- President
- Treasurer
- Secretary
Once you’ve got your team and your club’s purpose figured out, you’re ready to register.
Important Things to Know
- Everyone is Welcome
- LUSU clubs must be inclusive. Membership can’t be restricted based on age, race, religion, ability, immigration or citizenship status, social status, gender, gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation.
- Get Involved
- You can join as many clubs as you like
- Unique Purpose Required
- Clubs need a distinct purpose — we don’t allow clubs with the same or very similar goals. This keeps the club community diverse and meaningful.
- Check the Clubs Den first to make sure your club idea stands out.
- Clubs Aren’t for Class Projects
- You can’t create a club to complete class assignments or use club resources for coursework or degree projects or requirements.
- Clubs cannot be used to run or operate business
- Clubs are not permitted to conduct ongoing or day-to-day entrepreneurial ventures under the club name.
- If students wish to pursue a business, it must operate entirely outside of club activities and identity.
Club Branding Guidelines
When creating your club or considering a refresh of your club identity, it’s important to maintain a clear separation from Lakehead University’s official branding. The Clubs Den allows your club to upload a logo that appears alongside your club name and profile. For students browsing the Clubs Den, your logo is often their first impression of who you are. A clear, recognizable logo helps your club stand out, communicate its purpose or personality, and connect with potential members before they even open your page. However, there are some branding guidelines clubs must follow.
Use of “Lakehead University”, “Lakehead”or “LU” in club names.
Clubs don’t have to use “Lakehead University or LU” in their names
Use of “Lakehead University Student Union” or “LUSU” in club names is not permitted.
Logos and Visual Identity
Clubs may not use the likeness of Lakehead University, Lakehead University Student Union, or logos in any form.
Even if your design uses similar colours or imagery in different ways, the overall look and feel can still create an unintended connection to official LU or LUSU branding, which is why such designs are not allowed.
Need Help Finding Officers?
Looking to start a club but don’t have enough officers? We can help you find your officer team.
Connecting with other students is an important first step in starting your club. Seek out individuals who share similar interests and may be interested in taking on an officer role. Be clear about the positions you are looking to fill, what each role involves, and the expected level of commitment.
