Types of Clubs

Ready to find your people or explore a new passion? LUSU clubs offer something for everyone.

Membership Exclusivity
Most clubs generally welcome all interested students to join and participate in activities. However, LUSU by-laws allow for membership restrictions in three distinct categories: political, religious, and academic discipline.

Categories of clubs you can join:

Clubs focused on specific academic disciplines or professional development.

Groups dedicated to the arts and artistic expression.

Organizations that focus on volunteer work, community service, and social justice initiatives.

Groups that celebrate and promote the traditions, customs, languages, arts, and heritage of specific cultures from a diverse range of cultures around the world.

Clubs focused on promoting physical and mental well-being among students.

Clubs for students to share and explore common interests and hobbies.

Clubs that engage in political discourse, promote civic awareness, and support various political causes and ideologies. (Note: Clubs associated with any Political Parties are not eligible for funding)

Clubs whose primary purpose involves casual and non-competitive participation in a physical activity or sport-inspired interest. Recreation Clubs do not participate in organized competitions, tournaments, or matches. These clubs focus on social, wellness, or skill-building aspects of activity and are not required to register with LU Athletics, but are required to complete additional athletic risk management and waiver forms.

Organizations centred around religious, spiritual, or interfaith activities (e.g., Campus Christian Fellowship, Muslim Student Association, Interfaith Dialogue Club)

Groups focused on scientific research, technology, and innovation (e.g., Robotics Club, Biotechnology Society, Astronomy Club)

A club whose primary purpose involves athletic training and participation in competitive sport or physical activity. Sport Clubs are able to engage in competitions, tournaments, or organized matches. All Sport Clubs are required to complete additional risk management forms, and required to follow any guidelines of their governing sport bodies.

Societies are official member-based organizations established around specific faculties or academic departments at Lakehead University. They are typically formally supported by their respective faculty or department, and membership is composed of students enrolled in related programs. Students are often considered members by virtue of their academic affiliation. Society membership is restricted to students enrolled in the specific faculty or academic program.

Clubs focused on promoting sustainable practices, environmental conservation, and raising awareness about global and local environmental issues (e.g., Environmental Club, Sustainable Living Club, Renewable Energy Society)
